Financial Fraud and Online Security Advice
Being targeted by financial fraud or discovering your money has been taken can be devastating. If this happens to you, or you suspect something’s not right, we’re here to help. We can offer practical advice to help you regain control of your finances and move forward.
Spotting the warning signs
If you’re contacted out of the blue with a ‘too good to be true’ investment opportunity, or you’re asked to act quickly, stop and take a moment. Fraudsters often create a false sense of urgency to push you into making a decision. Be cautious of anyone who:
- Pressures you with a deadline
- Asks for passwords or payment details over the phone
- Sends links via email or text requesting personal information
If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts. You can always check with us before taking any action.
If you’ve received a suspicious email or connection request claiming to be from St. James’s Place, let us know right away. You can also check the Financial Services Register (run by the Financial Conduct Authority) to verify if someone is a regulated adviser.
Staying safe online
We take your security seriously, and we’ve put measures in place to help protect your money and personal data. But there are also simple steps you can take to improve your online safety.
Your online security checklist:
Use strong passwords
Choose passwords that are at least 8 characters long and include a mix of numbers, symbols, and letters. Avoid common words or names, and don’t use the same password for multiple accounts. Update them regularly and never share them.
Be cautious with emails and calls
Unexpected emails could contain viruses or links to fake websites. Don’t click on suspicious links or attachments, and never share sensitive info over the phone unless you’re sure who you’re speaking to.
Keep your devices updated
Make sure your operating system, antivirus software and firewall are all up to date. Run regular scans to detect and remove any threats.
Avoid unsecured public Wi-Fi
Don’t access sensitive information when connected to public or unsecured Wi-Fi, such as in cafes or hotels.
Be mindful of social media
Cybercriminals often collect personal details from social media to commit identity theft. Use privacy settings and think twice before sharing personal details like your birthday, location or job.
How we work with you safely
St. James’s Place will:
- Provide a secure login for your Online Services (look for the padlock symbol in your browser)
- Only send money to verified accounts in your name
- Always verify your identity using security questions when speaking on the phone
We will never:
- Ask for your password or credit card details over the phone
- Email you a link asking you to log in and provide account details
- Ask you to call us back urgently about a problem without verifying our identity
